Atlanta, GA -- The Federal Alliance for Safe Homes-FLASH, Inc. was recognized by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region IV Saturday for developing its Blueprint for Safety program. The Alliance has been exceptionally successful in promoting disaster safety using marketing materials, a Web site and toll-free hotline. The program is active in Florida and other vulnerable areas of the Southeast and Gulf Coast.

"The Blueprint program is truly unparalleled in its approach to bringing together emergency managers, homeowners and homebuilders in pursuit of better protection from hurricanes for homes and families," said FEMA Region IV Director Ken Burris. "While we cannot prevent hurricanes, tornadoes and other disasters from occurring, we can do something to reduce the possibility of personal injury and the amount of property damage. That is what the Disaster Resistant Communities program is all about."

The award was presented during the 2002 Southeast Disaster Resistant Communities Summit in Charleston, South Carolina, on June 22. The award was in the Hazard Retrofit category, one of 12 categories in which government entities, businesses and individuals were recognized for their work in safeguarding communities by making them more resistant to natural disasters. Award recipients were nominated by county, state or federal emergency management workers.
