Atlanta, GA -- The Chattooga County, Georgia, Board of Education was recognized by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region IV Saturday for its ChattoogaNet Project, which built a technology infrastructure for the county. As part of the project, students were able to establish free dial-up Internet access for school employees and community members.

"While we cannot prevent hurricanes, tornadoes and other disasters from occurring, we can do something to reduce the possibility of personal injury and the amount of property damage," said FEMA Region IV Director Ken Burris. "These students and the Board of Education have performed an invaluable service to inform and educate citizens about disaster mitigation, prevention and preparedness. That is what Disaster Resistant Communities are all about."

The project enabled the development of an Internet presence for both the school district and Chattooga County Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber's Web site also highlights the importance of disaster preparedness and mitigation.

The award was presented during the Southeast Disaster Resistant Communities Summit in Charleston, South Carolina, on June 22. The award was in the Special Services category, one of 12 categories in which government entities, businesses and individuals were recognized for their work in safeguarding communities by making them more resistant to natural disasters. Award recipients were nominated by county, state or federal emergency management workers.
