Wise, VA -- June 3, 2002 Buchanan and Tazewell county residents who suffered damages from May flooding and severe storms have one week left to apply for disaster unemployment assistance. The deadline for residents of these counties is June 10. Anyone interested in filing for disaster unemployment assistance should visit the nearest Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) field office.

Self-employed and unemployed workers who live or work in the designated disaster areas and are not covered by regular state unemployment insurance programs may be eligible for this assistance under the major disaster declaration by President Bush on May 5. This program may provide benefits of up to $368 per week to eligible individuals for up to 26 weeks or until they are able to return to work.

Applicants should bring their Social Security number and, if possible, documentation showing earnings for the calendar year of 2001.

Residents of the two counties who have not registered for state and federal disaster assistance can do so by calling FEMA toll-free at 1-800-621 FEMA (1-800-621-3362). The hearing- and speech- impaired may register by calling (TTY) 1-800-462-7585.
