North Carolinians Receive $334.6 Million for Disaster Recovery

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The disaster aid pipeline is fully open and flowing freely in North Carolina seven weeks after Hurricane Floyd. To date, a total of $334.6 million in federal and state funds have been approved for communities and individuals affected by Hurricanes Floyd and Irene in eastern and central North Carolina. More than 75,000 applicants have registered for disaster assistance, exceeding the total applications for Hurricane Fran in 1996 when 72,730 state residents sought assistance.
State and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials said they expect the total number of applicants to continue to rise because persons affected by Hurricane Irene can also apply for disaster assistance. Recovery officials urge any disaster victims with uninsured losses from Hurricanes Floyd or Irene to register by calling the toll-free application hotline at 1-800-462-9029, open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until further notice. Individuals with hearing or speech impairments who use special keyboard equipment (TTY) should call 1-800-462-7585.
Summary of latest disaster statistics:
- More than $306 million in disaster aid has been disbursed in the form of housing assistance, individual and family grants, Small Business Administration (SBA) loans and disaster unemployment benefits for job losses related to the two storms.
- Some 26,000 registrants have been approved for over $44 million in disaster housing assistance.
- Almost 10,000 applicants have been approved for IFG grants totaling over $32 million.
- 4,274 individuals have been approved for special disaster unemployment benefits totaling more than $989,561.
- The Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved 5,441 low-interest loans for individuals and businesses totaling almost $230 million.
- Twenty-two disaster recovery centers have lent assistance to more than 46,720 disaster victims.
- Travel trailers currently occupied by disaster victims made homeless total 857.
- More than $28.4 million in federal funds has been earmarked for local governments and public agencies for debris removal, infrastructure costs, and essential public services.
