SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- During the next two weeks, the hours of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's teleregistration number will be extended to assist those who need to apply for assistance.

"We want to be available for those fire victims who work during the day and may not be able to register for assistance during regular business hours," said Mark Ghilarducci, FEMA's federal coordinating officer. "We want to encourage people to call as soon as possible if they've been affected by the recent fires, because the sooner they call, the sooner we can help them."

The extended registration hours will begin Monday, Nov. 22 and remain in place through Dec. 4. The new hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. (Holiday hours will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 24, and the teleregistration lines will be closed Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 25.) The teleregistration hours after Dec. 4 will be determined based on the needs of the victims.

Those needing temporary housing assistance, and who live in Butte, San Bernardino, Shasta or Yuba counties may register by phone by calling the toll-fee registration at:

1-800-462-9029 (TTY 1-800-462-7585)

The teleregistration number is the fastest and easiest way for fire victims to apply for FEMA assistance.

In addition to the teleregistration line, FEMA has established information centers designed to be a centralized information source for those affected by the August through October wild fires. The offices are situated in the disaster offices already opened by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

Those affected by the fires may be eligible for two forms of federal assistance: disaster loans and temporary housing:

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) temporary housing assistance provides funds for those whose homes were destroyed or made unlivable as a result of the fires. The program provides funding for temporary accommodations or minimal home repairs to make a property safe, secure and habitable.

Low-interest SBA loans are designed for homeowners, renters and businesses of all sizes for the repair, replacement or rebuilding of disaster-damaged property.
