Arkansas Disaster Assistance Tops $4.2 Million

Little Rock, AR -- Disaster assistance for individuals, families and businesses in the declared counties in Arkansas now exceeds $4.2 million, state and federal recovery officials said today.
The following is a summary of ongoing response and recovery efforts as of the close of business, Tuesday, January 23, 2001:
- FEMA has received 29,773 individual applications for disaster assistance.
- FEMA has approved more than $3,668,881 in disaster housing assistance to 4,377 residents. Many of the residents received help from the home repair program. The program provides grants to homeowners for essential repairs, including repairs to heating, electrical and plumbing. Other homeowners and renters received rental assistance to enable them to rent temporary accommodations.
- State disaster relief officials have approved payment of 381 checks totaling $346,003 to help people cover the costs of serious disaster-related needs and necessary expenses, including medical, dental and transportation not covered by insurance or other federal, state or volunteer programs. This program is funded 75 percent by FEMA and 25 percent by the state.
- The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved 40 loans for homeowners, renters and businesses totaling $252,800.
- Five additional counties (Cleburne, Fulton, Greene, Marion and Stone) were added to the list of Arkansas counties where residents and businesses are eligible for assistance to individuals and businesses. Now individuals and businesses in 65 counties are eligible for aid: Arkansas, Baxter, Benton, Bradley, Calhoun, Clark, Cleburne, Cleveland, Columbia, Conway, Crawford, Crittenden, Cross, Dallas, Desha, Drew, Faulkner, Franklin, Fulton, Garland, Grant, Greene, Hot Spring, Hempstead, Howard, Independence, Izard, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Lafayette, Lee, Lincoln, Little River, Logan, Lonoke, Madison, Marion, Miller, Mississippi, Monroe, Montgomery, Nevada, Newton, Ouachita, Perry, Pike, Poinsett, Polk, Pope, Prairie, Pulaski, St. Francis, Saline, Scott, Searcy, Sebastian, Sevier, Stone, Union, Van Buren, Washington, White, Woodruff and Yell.
- Four additional counties (Baxter, Boone, Cleburne, and Sharp) were added to the list of Arkansas counties eligible for cost-share funding of emergency protective measures, debris removal and repair or replacement of public facilities such as roads, bridges, buildings and utilities. Now 65 counties are eligible for Public Assistance: Arkansas, Baxter, Benton, Boone, Bradley, Calhoun, Clark, Cleburne, Cleveland, Columbia, Conway, Crawford, Crittenden, Cross, Dallas, Desha, Drew, Faulkner, Franklin, Fulton, Garland, Grant, Hot Spring, Hempstead, Howard, Izard, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Lafayette, Lee, Lincoln, Little River, Logan, Lonoke, Madison, Marion, Miller, Mississippi, Monroe, Montgomery, Nevada, Newton, Ouachita, Perry, Pike, Poinsett, Polk, Pope, Prairie, Pulaski, St. Francis, Saline, Scott, Searcy, Sebastian, Sevier, Sharp, Stone, Union, Van Buren, Washington, White, Woodruff and Yell.

After registration, residents can call the FEMA Helpline at 800-525-0321 for questions about their applications. For the speech and hearing impaired, the number for both registration and questions about applications is 800-462-7585. These lines are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
