Oklahoma City, OK -- A toll--free application telephone number is now operational for homeowners, renters and businesses who suffered property damage or loss in the declared counties affected by the severe winter storms that began December 25.

C. Michel Butler, federal coordinating officer, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said those affected by flooding may apply for assistance immediately by calling this toll--free application number, 1--800--462--9029, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. seven days a week until further notice. Those with a speech or hearing impairment may call TTY 1--800 462--7585.

"You must call the toll--free number to register," said Fred Liebe, state coordinating officer, Oklahoma Department of Civil Emergency Management (ODCEM). "Notifying local emergency management officials or calling the American Red Cross doesn't register you for state and federal assistance."

The number can be used to apply for a wide range of state and federal disaster assistance such as grants to help pay for temporary housing, emergency home repairs and other serious disaster--related expenses. Low--interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration also will be available to cover residential and business losses not fully compensated by insurance.

The Oklahoma counties designated eligible for disaster assistance include Adair, Atoka, Bryan, Carter, Cherokee, Choctaw, Cleveland, Coal, Cotton, Creek, Garvin, Grady, Haskell, Hughes, Jefferson, Johnston, LeFlore, Latimer, Lincoln, Love, Marshall, McClain, McCurtain, McIntosh, Murray, Muskogee, Okfuskee, Oklahoma, Okmulgee, Pittsburg, Pontotoc, Pottawatomie, Pushmataha, Seminole, Sequoyah, Stephens, Tulsa, Wagoner and Washington.
