Oklahoma City, OK -- Damage inspectors are now in the field verifying the nature and extent of the damage suffered by those who have applied for federal and state disaster aid as a result of the winter storms that began Christmas Day, Federal Coordinating Officer C. Michel Butler said in a joint statement with State Coordinating Officer Fred Liebe.

This aid includes housing assistance, grants for essential needs unmet by other assistance programs and U.S. Small Business Administration low--interest disaster--assistance loans.

Butler and Liebe advise that disaster assistance applicants should ask to see a FEMA inspector's ID.

"Our inspectors are required to display their picture identification badge at all times. If they cannot produce this document, they undoubtedly are not FEMA inspectors," Butler stated.

As of COB Jan.11, more than four thousand Oklahomans have registered for disaster assistance by calling the toll--free registration number at 1--800--462--9029 (TTY 1--800--462--7585). The lines are open 8 a.m. -- 6 p.m. daily.
