Oklahoma City, OK -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster Teleregistration line has experienced extremely heavy call volume this week, due to multiple disaster declarations in several states at the same time. Because of this, some callers are experiencing waits of up to 15 minutes or longer.
"The important thing to remember", said Don Baggett, FEMA's Human Services Officer, "is that we are here to help, and we aren't leaving anytime soon." The registration period for disaster assistance in declared Oklahoma counties began on Jan. 5 and lasts 60 days. Persons still experiencing emergency conditions are urged to keep trying the toll--free disaster Teleregistration number.
In many instances, conditions have returned to normal, and individuals may have reimbursable disaster related expenses. These persons may consider waiting a few days to apply to avoid waiting on the telephone. To address this situation, FEMA will have additional personnel manning the phones beginning today and will consider expanding hours of operation if necessary.
To apply for disaster assistance call 1--800--462--9029. Phone lines are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. When you apply please have your Social Security number, address & zip code of damaged property, current mailing address, telephone numbers where you can be reached and household income information.
