John Magaw Designated Acting Director Of FEMA

Washington, DC -- The outgoing head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), James L. Witt designated John Magaw as the acting director of FEMA, effective noon, Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001. Magaw will serve as acting FEMA director until the President's choice to fill the position, Joe Allbaugh, completes the Senate confirmation process and is sworn in as the new director.

In December 1999, Magaw was appointed senior advisor to the director for terrorism preparedness. In that role, he worked with the FEMA director's office to plan and coordinate domestic terrorism preparedness efforts. Prior to joining FEMA, Magaw was director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, where he spearheaded policy and organizational changes that allowed the bureau to be more diversified and efficient.

Along with the designation of John Magaw, Witt also designated Clay Hollister as acting chief of staff and Cathy Light as acting senior policy advisor.
