Atlanta, GA --The Grand Strand Water and Sewer Authority will receive $474,500 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency FEMA/South Carolina Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) to improve 12 pump stations.

FEMA's 75 percent share of this project is $355,875. The state of South Carolina will contribute the remaining 25 percent, $118,625.

"This truly is mitigation at work - cost effective measures that make communities more disaster resistant," said Ron Osborne, interim director of the South Carolina Emergency Preparedness Division, which is coordinating funding for the project.

Grants under the HMGP go to state and local governments to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures. The program's goal is to reduce the loss of life, property, and goods due to natural disasters.

In making the announcement, Osborne said, "I am delighted to announce that this funding will pay to retrofit 12 pumps stations to make them more disaster resistant. This should provide better flood protection for up to 1,200 homes from a 100-year-flood event."

The grant will provide for the following:
