Cerro Grande Fire Assistance Program Update

Release Date: March 13, 2001
Release Number: HQ-01-CG09

SANTA FE, N.M. -- A total of $1.1 million compensation has been approved for 170 claimants who have settled their claims under the Cerro Grande Fire Assistance Act (CGFAA). Final and partial payment approvals exceed $51.4 million as of March 10, 2001.

Individuals, business owners, pueblos and state and local governments have until Aug. 28, 2002 to file a Notice of Loss, indicating their intention to file a claim through the Office of Cerro Grande Fire Claims. With the help of a claims reviewer, claimants have 180 days from the date they file a Notice of Loss to complete a Proof of Loss.

Claimants who already have filed their Notice of Loss and need more time to compile their information have an automatic, one-time extension to file their Proof of Loss. The 90 days are from the date their Proof of Loss is scheduled to be filed or 90 days from the date the final regulations are published, whichever comes first. A claims reviewer can provide additional information to help claimants make this decision.

Under the CGFAA, the authorizing official has 30 days from the date claimants turn in their Proof of Loss to make a final determination.
