In recognition of this health observance, CDC is highlighting colorectal cancer screening information from the Behavioral Factor Risk Surveillance System (BRFSS).
BRFSS data are collected by telephone survey from adults age 18 and older about a variety of health-related behaviors. In 2006, the survey included two questions related to colon cancer:
• Adults aged 50+ who have had a blood stool test within the past two years
• Adults aged 50+ who have ever had a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy
The data highlighted here focus on “yes” responses to the question: Adults aged 50+ who have ever had a sigmoidoscopy or colonscopy. In ten states, 54% or fewer of surveyed adults aged 50 and older responded yes when asked whether they have ever had a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. In twelve states, 54.1% to 56.6% of those surveyed responded “yes” to this question. In eleven states, 56.7% to 60.7% of those surveyed had ever had a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. In seven states (Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, and Rhode Island), 65.4% or more of those surveyed responded “yes” to this question.
Following is the GIS (Geographic Information Systems) map produced for this BRFSS data set.
