This image by Frances Benjamin Johnston documents the lobby of
the then newly opened Willard Hotel. Johnston, a pioneering American
photojournalist, turned her full attention to garden and architectural
photography shortly after this photograph was made. Johnston's
Willard photographs were instrumental in providing essential detail
for the restoration of the hotel's interior, including for replicating
the lobby's original lighting fixtures. Johnston's entire photographic
archive and personal papers are in the collections of the Library
of Congress.
