Clare Boothe Luce had successful careers as author, editor playwright,
journalist, congresswoman, and diplomat. In 1936 her play The
Women began a two year run at the Ethyl Barrymore Theater
in New York. Luce's play satirized upper-class New York women. Shown
here are the playscript and early scene descriptions with notes
for the first scene showing the different social range of women
from Saks shop girl to countess.
