Apropos related standards for retrieval of XML records and X-Path, at first glance Xinclude has the things we do with records in SRW/SRU. There is the notion of XML encoded/string encoded results. And there is even a way to specify a subset of a document with an XPointer. http://www.w3.org/TR/xinclude/ -- Adam
