Head of Metadata Services Purdue University Libraries seek an energetic and innovative librarian to join the Libraries as Head of Metadata Services. The Libraries and the University: The Purdue University Libraries have embarked upon a dynamic new role within the University, emphasizing a closer integration of the Libraries into the academic mission of Purdue. The Purdue University Libraries system, which consists of the Hicks Undergraduate Library, Archives and Special Collections, and 11 disciplinary libraries, has holdings of over 2.5 million volumes and provides extensive access to electronic resources. Staff totals more than 200, including 70 faculty and professionals. An innovative information literacy instruction program promotes collaboration with teaching faculty, employing multiple approaches to integrate active learning into the University curriculum and prepare students for lifelong learning. A dynamic research program is focused both within the discipline of library science and interdisciplinarily. Purdue has the second largest public university international student enrollment in the nation, http://www.purdue.edu/ Lafayette/West Lafayette is a growing, vibrant, historic community located about forty-five minutes from Indianapolis and less than two hours from Chicago: http://www.lafayette-in.com/ Duties & Responsibilities: The Head of Metadata Services reports to the Associate Dean for Information Technology and Resource Services (ITRS) and has the responsibility for developing a comprehensive metadata management program for the Purdue University Libraries. Specifies, and coordinates the application of, appropriate descriptive, administrative, and technical metadata schemas for digitized and born-digital content managed by the Libraries. This position will develop strategies for metadata interoperability. This includes strategies for integrating heterogeneous metadata from highly distributed collections within local services, as well as exposing locally-generated metadata to external services. The position will participate in national and international discussions about the emerging and dynamic role of metadata in delivering information resources to end users. The position will participate in interdisciplinary, sponsored research with Purdue faculty, and will work closely with the Libraries' Research Unit to develop new approaches to organizing and curating data. The position will also work closely with the Digital Collections Librarian and other Libraries' faculty and staff to develop policies, best practices, and workflows for creating and sustaining digital collections. The successful candidate will work with faculty and staff within ITRS and Research to develop a systems architecture for managing heterogeneous metadata, including MARC and non-MARC formats. The position will work with the Associate Dean for ITRS and the Head of ITRS Operations to develop a production metadata services unit. Requirements: Master's degree in Library/Information Science (ALA accredited or equivalent) and/or terminal degree in a relevant subject area. Experience working with metadata standards from the library and digital library communities (e.g., MARC, EAD, METS, MODS). Experience selecting and applying knowledge organization systems (e.g. CV, ontologies, folksonomies) to digital library projects. Familiarity with data interchange standards (e.g., OAI-PMH, SRW/U). Familiarity with current issues and trends in library technology. Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff and students. Ability to work independently and as a team member in a dynamic environment and on a variety of simultaneous projects. Desired: Experience collaborating with faculty and staff external to libraries on digital projects. Demonstrated success with grant-writing. 5 years of academic library experience. Experience in relational database design. Experience with developing standards and recommendations in data curation and related metadata management. Project management experience. Ability to work independently and as a team member in a dynamic environment and on a variety of simultaneous projects. Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary research initiatives. SALARY: Commensurate with experience and qualifications. STATUS AND BENEFITS: Faculty tenure-track. Rank of Associate or Full Professor depending upon qualifications. Twelve-month appointment with annual vacation of 22 working days; TIAA-CREF retirement. Flexible benefit programs.
