Subject: MODS to Dublin Core mapping
Comments: To: [log in to unmask]

A mapping from MODS to unqualified Dublin Core is now available on the MODS site: http://www.loc.gov/standards/mods/mods-dcsimple.html This mapping gives equivalencies between the elements in the Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS) and the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set, version 1.1 (simple Dublin Core). The document may be used for converting a MODS record to Dublin Core. For instance, one application is to expose MODS records for OAI harvesting in Dublin Core syntax. There are of course differences between this mapping and the Dublin Core to MODS mapping at http://www.loc.gov/standards/mods/dcsimple-mods.html. In the MODS to DC mapping, there are many cases where multiple MODS elements are mapped to one Dublin Core element (as opposed to one Dublin Core element mapped to multiple MODS elements). Suggestions are given for selecting an appropriate mapping where there is not an obvious equivalency. As with other crosswalks, this document provides the specifications for creating tools (e.g. XSLT stylesheets) to convert a MODS instance to a Dublin Core instance. (If anyone has already done one for MODS to DC, please let us know!)
