Science Ambassador Lecturer Biography

This presentation outlined the genetic causes of muscular dystrophy, types of muscular dystrophy, and treatments available for muscular dystrophy. This session also focused on difficulties surrounding research of muscular dystrophy and highlighted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Muscular Dystrophy Surveillance, Tracking and Research Network (MD STARnet), a surveillance system that investigates muscular dystrophy distribution, services, and care. Katie Kolor, PhD, MS Dr. Katie Kolor has a PhD in genetics from the University of Washington and an MS in genetic counseling from Sarah Lawrence College. She has been fortunate to have many wonderful teachers throughout her academic years, and she has enjoyed a variety of formal teaching experiences herself including teaching undergraduate-level genetics and molecular biology. Her most rewarding teaching experiences have been participating in the Science Education Partnership Program in Washington and the College Bound program at the Bedford Hills Women’s Correctional Facility in New York. She is currently working as a fellow at CDC on projects related to Duchenne/Becker muscular dystrophy and newborn screening.
