Liette Vasseur, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, has been elected chair of CEC’s Joint Public Advisory Committee (JPAC) for 2001.

Ms. Vasseur is associate professor in the Department of Biology and Environmental Studies at Saint Mary's University, where she also serves as coordinator of the Environmental Studies Program.

JPAC gathers public input and provides independent advice to Council on all matters within the scope of CEC’s work. JPAC is composed of 15 members, five appointed by the government of each country. JPAC’s Chair is elected by Committee members on a rotation basis for a one-year term.

Regina Barba, the outgoing chair for 2000, has been a member of JPAC since March 1999. "We are fortunate to have a great team and I am sure that under the leadership and the experience of Ms. Vasseur, the year 2001 will be hugely successful,"said Barba.

Ms. Vasseur’s mandate starts on 1 January 2001.
