It depends whether you consider the DOI a location or an identifier. It
could be included in both if it is both. If the DOI can be expressed as an
http: string, it could be included in 856. (Since DOI hasn't been
registered as a URI scheme or URN namespace, it is problematic to have
that expression in 856). The "raw" DOI then could be included in 024. In
other words, one needs to make that distinction between identifier and
location.
So, if you have a DOI attached to a DOI proxy server like:
http://dx.doi.org/10.1000/123
you could put it in 856.
If you want to record the "raw" DOI, you can put in 024:
doi:10.1000/123
Remember, 856 is a holdings field and electronic locations are included
here. It is often thought to be a bibliographic field because it is so
often included in bibliographic records, but the original intent was that
it was an electronic location, not really an identifier. So 856 is more at
the "copy" level (equivalent to field 852 for physical items) than the
record level.
