As currently defined, $z relates to the text in $t and is coded only if the
language is not already represented in field 008/35-37. $z is also
repeatable. However, your question points to two larger issues that we have
not addressed adequately: 1. Coding for language in the authority format is
now obsolete. 2. Does 031 $z duplicate information already present in bib
format field 041?
1. I think rather than reintroducing language coding to the authority
format, we would be inclined to define 031 $z in the bib format only.
2. In many cases, 031 $z could duplicate information coded in the 041. It
was introduced into the Unimarc incipit field as a means of being more
specific in matching language codes to their corresponding texts. However, I
need to verify exactly how all of this is being done in current RISM
practice, which I will try to do before the meeting.
Thanks.

Subject: Question on 2004-DP01 Incipits
The $z subfield is listed as "Language of text" -- what text is being
referred to here? and how does it relate to the text in $t? (which is
repeatable)
