Henning
Bay-Nielsen
Translation of Bjorn Smedby’s obituary (distributed to the Nordic countries from the WHO Collaborating Center in Uppsala, Sweden)
Henning Bay-Nielsen, one of the Nordic pioneers in the areas of work at the Nordic Classification Center, died on 24 January 2001, at the age of 77 years.
Henning was a surgeon and a urologist but during the later years he devoted most of his time to medical statistics, classification work and injury prevention at both Nordic and international level.
He was the driving force in developing the Nordic procedure classification, "NOMESCO Classification of Surgical Procedures" (NCSP), and he was also the initiator of the "NOMESCO Classification of External Causes of Injuries" (NCECI). The Nordic Classification Center now has the responsibility of maintaining these two classifications.
During the summer of 1999, Henning was operated for an intestinal cancer which unfortunately had spread as metastases to the liver. He was treated with chemotherapy for half a year, and in the beginning of 2000 his condition was so stable, that Henning decided to discontinue the treatment and live his life as normally as possible. He participated in work at the National Institute of Public Health, Copenhagen including work within the EU Injury Prevention Program until the autumn of 2000. His condition deteriorated quickly during 2-3 months, but he was in his home until a few days before his death.
Henning’s death is a great loss not only to his family but also to all of us who had the opportunity to work with him during many years within medical statistics, classification work and other exciting initiatives concerning injury registration and injury prevention.
