Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

Promising Practices

SUBJECT:

Promising Practices

TO:

All Program Directors

A recent General Accounting Office (GAO) report recommended that the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) disseminate State and local practices intended to boost enrollment. In response to this, we are compiling information on such “promising practices” used by State agencies that increase participation in the Food Stamp Program (FSP) through changes to a State agency’s administration of the FSP or outreach efforts.

We need Regional Office assistance in this endeavor. Please examine State reports, plans and your reviews of State activities and when a promising practice is identified, complete as much of the attached form as possible. We do not expect you to survey the State agencies directly in order to gather this information. Rather, you should be or become aware of promising practices through your normal business dealings with State agency representatives. Please get as much information as you can about the promising practice using the attached form as your guide.

We will share examples of these promising practices with all State agencies with the hope that they will inspire discussion or changes in procedures that will increase participation in or improve State agencies’ administration of the FSP.

If you have any questions or need additional information on administrative practices, please contact Moira Johnston at 703-305-2515. For information on outreach, contact Laura Griffin at 703-605-4399.
