This annotated portal describes more than 200 selected Web sites which provide information on Sweden. It is a common practice for many Web sites created in non-English speaking countries to provide an interface not only in the national language but also in English in order to reach an international audience. Keep in mind that such bilingual sites are often most complete in the national language.

A cooperative effort, the site is maintained by the Swedish Institute, its purpose to share abroad the attributes of Sweden and to encourage Swedish economic growth and interests. Links to sites covering the individual Nordic countries and the region as a whole. Offers access to reference and bibliographic information and to Scandinavian departments at academic institutions as well as select journals and "other sites of interest." Maintained by Montana State University.

The Library of Congress possesses retrospective telephone directories for many cities in Sweden. Both residential and organizational directories from 1937 until 1997 (holdings as of Decembeer 2003). Directories are listed in chronological order and are in Swedish unless otherwise noted. The last sic directories are specialized and are not in chronological order.

Statistical Resources

Country Indicators for Foreign Policy (CIFP) (http://www.carleton.ca/cifp/)
The CIFP project goes far beyond just foreign policy, covering many aspects of government and society. It was initiated in 1997 by two Canadian institutions: the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) and the Norman Patterson School of International Affairs. The CIFP database includes over one hundred performance indicators for 196 countries, spanning 15 years for most indicators. The data are drawn from open sources, including UN offices, the World Bank, and so on, and attempt to measure domestic armed conflict, governance and political instability, militarization, religious and ethnic diversity, demographic stress, economic performance, human development, environmental stress, and international linkages.

Eurostat (http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu)
Eurostat does not compile statistics, but rather seeks to pull together data that are comparable, standardizing the presentation of statistics across the EU. It is primarily a fee-based service, but provides some informative and lengthy free statistical reports as well as news releases and reports on special topics. In eleven EU languages. Searchable. By theme or collection.

Population Index on the Web (http://popindex.princeton.edu)
Population Index is a quarterly periodical that began in 1935. Each issue presents an annotated bibliography of recently published books, journal articles, and other materials on population topics. Links to a bibliographic database of the journal's contents from 1986 to at least 2000. Hundreds of the database citations pertain to Sweden. Browse or search for information on Sweden.

Statistics Sweden is the government Web site entrusted with providing access to official statistics of Sweden. Includes links to statistical database, statistics of Sweden, subject and focus areas. Searchable. In Swedish; partially in English.
