Yemen is an independent country on the southern edge of the
Arabian peninsula. Sana' is the nation's capital
and largest city. Yemen gained independence from Great Britain
on November 30, 1967. The country's full name in Arabic,
the official language, (al-Jumhuriyah al-Yamaniyah al-Sha'biyah
al-Dimuqratiyah) People's Democratic Republic of Yemen.
Yemen is governed by the United Political Organization National
Front, the country's only political party. About ninety
percent of the people in Yemen are Arabs. The rest are Indians,
Pakistanis, or East Africans. Most of Yemen is hot and dry.
There are only a few fertile areas where the land can be farmed.
Yemen is an important port and oil center. Its oil refinery
and port provide the country with most of its income. The oil
refinery can process about 50 million barrels of oil a year.
Ships of many nations use the port of Aden for refueling, repairs,
and transferring cargoes. Coffee and Qat are the main cash
crops. Coffee is a major export.
