This pathfinder contains basic information about Easter Island (Chile). The most important source for bibliography of books and articles concerning Easter Island (Chile) is the annual Handbook of Latin American Studies (http://lcweb2.loc.gov/hlas/) produced by over 130 contributing editors under the editorship of the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress. Additional coverage of journal articles can be found through a subscription to the Hispanic American Periodical Index (http://hapi.gseis.ucla.edu/).   Both the Handbook and HAPI are available in selected libraries in book form.

Easter Island is the world's most isolated inhabited island. It is also one of the most mysterious. Easter Island is roughly midway between Chile and Tahiti. The triangular shaped island is made mostly of volcanic rock. Small coral formations exist along the shoreline, but the lack of a coral reef has allowed the sea to cut cliffs around much of the island. The coastline has many lava tubes and volcanic caves. Site is full of impressive photographs and drawings.

The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) offers online supplements to the "NOVA" segment "Secrets of Easter Island." This supplement provides an online tour of Easter island using text, images, and video files. The segment recounts the efforts of archaeologists to solve the mystery of how hundreds of huge stone statues were moved and erected on the island in ancient times.
