Search Engines: Romania

Created and maintained by the
 European Division
Collections and Services Directorate

These web sites provide information and links relating to search engines, including major search engines and engines originating in Romania. Also discussed are engines which search: images and other multimedia; U.S. government web sites; and full-text articles. In addition, several annotations discuss considerations for choosing engines and search strategies specific to finding materials on Romania. See also Libraries, Archives: Bibliographic Databases.

Romanian Search Engines

GoFind. RO (http://www.gofind.ro)
GoFind. RO appears to be one of the largest search engines originating in Romania. It is also reasonably prompt, allows "phrase searching" and provides an advanced search page (cautare avansata). In February, 2002 it had about 20 percent dead links. It also indexed a small amount of material which Google did not (though Google had far more overall). Includes an annotated portal.

HOME. RO (http://www.home.ro)
This is a mirror of GoFind. RO described above. Gives same results, but a little slower and with less search options.

Search Engines of U.S. Government web sites

Many U.S. government agencies provide topical reports on individual countries. The two web sites given below all search U.S. government and military web sites. Major search engines also cover many government web sites, but not to the same depth necessarily or with the same relevancy ranking.

USA.gov (http://www.usa.gov)
The U.S. government's official web portal. The service aims to provide access to any government information on the Internet, including topics on business, the economy, science, technology, and more.

SearchGov.com (http://www.searchgov.com)
Features a directory of Web sites focusing on the U.S. government. Links to information on executive agencies, independent agencies, as well as state and local government. Provides searching tips for users.

The two web sites given below, GPO Access and GPO Access on the Web, make available search engines for important U.S. government serial publications and related sources of Congress and the President, such as: Budget of the U.S. Government; Congressional Bills Database; Congressional Directory; Congressional Documents; Congressional Record; Congressional Reports; Federal Register; Public Papers of the President; and Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents. Each of the serial titles listed above contains numerous references to Romania. Archives vary for each title, but most of them begin in the mid or late 1990s.

GPO Access on the Web (http://www.gpoaccess.gov/multidb.html)

GPO Access (http://www.gpoaccess.gov)
Maintained by the U.S. Government Printing Office.
