The links are to the scanned text of the 1997 edition of the ALA-LC Romanization Tables: Transliteration Schemes for Non-Roman Scripts, approved by the Library of Congress and the American Library Association. These links are to PDF files that require the Adobe Acrobat Reader. The free Reader may be downloaded from the Adobe web site.

Asia, Southern: Kashmir Conflict  (http://www.au.af.mil/au/aul/bibs/souasia/souakas.htm)
The Air University Library at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama, offers a bibliography about information related to the Kashmir conflict. The bibliography includes books and periodicals. The Kashmir conflict involves wars fought between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, which began in 1947 when Kashmir became part of India.

Society founded in 1804 to "encourage the study of and research in the Languages, Philosophy, Arts and Natural & Social Sciences in relation to Asia, in general and India, in particular." Presents a history of the Society, list of publications, organizational structure, and membership information. Includes a list of "important treasures" from the library, and tables of contents from "Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bombay" (since 1992).

The Web site aims to promote and celebrate Bengali culture containing detailed information on Bengali literature, history, legendary Bengali figures etc., including Nobel laureates Rabindranath Tagore and Amartya Sen. Other prominent literary personalities include Kazi Nazrul Islam, Subashchandra Bose, Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo, Vidya sagar, and Bankimchandra. Also included are arts and crafts and folk traditions. Links provided to other sites on Bengal, Bengali fonts, etc.

Online Hindi literary journal with separate sections for poetry, short stories, interviews, and editorials. Also includes a basic tutorial explaining the Hindi alphabet. Latest issue of magazine available.

Digital dictionaries of South Asia  (http://dsal.uchicago.edu/dictionaries/)
A collaborative effort to widen access to South Asian language dictionaries. Established dictionaries for over thirty modern literary languages of South Asia will be mounted on the Web for free and open access. Languages to be covered, in alphabetical order, are: Assamese, Baluchi, Bengali, Dhivehi, Dogri, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Mundari, Naga, Nepali, Newari, Oriya, Pali, Panjabi, Pashto, Persian, Prakrit, Rajasthani, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Sinhala, Tamil, Telugu, Torwali, and Urdu. Languages under consideration for a future project include: Ardhamagadhi, Avestan & Old Persian, Bodo, Brahui, Burmese, Dari, Khasi, Khowar, Kuki-Chin, Lahu, Lepcha, Pahlavi, Portuguese (in India), Romani, Santali, Tibetan, and Tulu.

The Goethals Indian Library and Research Society  (http://www.goethals.org/)
Library of mainly 18th and 19th century books and periodicals started by Paul Goethals, Jesuit Archbishop of Calcutta from 1886 to 1901 and donated to St. Xavier's College 1908. The library currently contains 18,663 volumes. Features subject catalogs, bibliographies (some annotated) and book lists on a wide range of topics: voyages and travels, history, biographies, folklore, astronomy, flora and fauna, geology, language and literature, archaeology, education, religion, philosophy, law, medicine, government and administration in India and other Asian countries. Arrangement within subgroups is alphabetical by title. Not all of the library holdings are included in these guides. Includes articles by the current director, Felix Raj.

Indiainfo.com Ltd. presents "IndiaInfo," an English-language online news service that focuses on India. Categories include astrology, business, sports, education, finance, and entertainment. The service also includes public opinion polls and online discussion groups. "IndiaInfo" is also available in such Indian languages as Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, and Gujarati.

Indianchild.com offers a collection of Web sites featuring information about the culture of India. Categories include monuments, festivals, temples, religions, languages, and more. This information is intended to provide homework assistance to students of all grade levels. There is a brief description of each site.

Gene R. Thursby presents a collection of Internet resources on Kashmir, a territory that is claimed by both India and Pakistan. Thursby offers links to e-mail lists, newsgroups, philanthropic organizations, and regional news. Information is provided about the disputed territory, the Kashmiri language, and regional travel.

Language in India is a monthly online journal devoted to the study of the languages spoken in the Indian sub-continent.

National Book Trust, India  (http://www.nbtindia.com/)
Initiative begun in 1957 to promote "reading habits by fostering bookmindedness in the country." Activities include publishing, promotion of books and reading, promotion of Indian books abroad, assistance to authors and publishers, and, promotion of children's literature, with special attention to genres that have generally been neglected in India, such as popular science. Users can search for titles by language or author. Includes information on the the NBT's book club, readers club, series, and organization.

National Gallery of Modern Art  (http://www.ngma-india.com/)
Inaugurated in 1954, the National Gallery of Modern Art collects works representing changing art forms over the last century and a half and features Bengali artists and styles. In addition to exhibition activities, the gallery organizes exhibitions abroad, lectures and conferences on modern art, and maintains a library of books, periodicals, photographs and audiovisual materials. The Web site includes a history of the gallery, biographical sketches of several prominent artists (Nandalal Bose, Amrita Sher Gill, Jamani Roy, Abanindranath Tagore, and Rabindranath Tagore) and the names and addresses of 100 eminent artists.

Offers information on Sanskrit, an Indian language, provided by Samskrita Bharathi, a non-profit organization based in New Delhi, India. Discusses Sanskrit language camps, teacher training camps, correspondence courses, magazines, and sound recordings.
