Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh  (http://www.amu.nic.in/)
Muslim university founded in 1875 as the Mohammadan Anglo Oriental College, and was for many years the most prominent Islamic college in India. The site provides information about courses of study, faculties and departments, and the admission process. Much of the site under construction when reviewed.

Bharati Vidyapeeth, Pune (India)  (http://www.iknowledgefactory.com/bvp/)
Founded in 1964 as an educational institution for students from primary through university levels, primarily in Maharashtra. In 1995 it became an accredited university by the University Grants Commission. The curriculum of the school focuses on medicine, law, and social sciences. The site includes information on the school's Institute on Environmental Education and Research.

Established in 1883, as one of the largest NGOs in India engaged in nature conservation research. Component agencies include ENVIS Centre for Avian Ecology and Inland Wetlands, Environmental Impact Assessment Cell, The Sa�lim Ali Nature Conservation Fund, Sa�lim Ali Loke Wan Tho Ornithological Research Fund, Conservation Committee, University of Mumbai, and the Conservation Education Centre. The Centre for Development Studies is a social science research institution established in 1971. Its purpose is to promote research, teaching and training in disciplines related to development with an emphasis on issues in Kerala. Research areas of the university include fisheries, agriculture, industry, poverty, health, nutrition, education, gender, and environment. The site includes background on the Centre, abstracts of sponsored research projects, and information about the faculty, library, and lists of publications.

India's largest children's publisher, Children's Book Trust of India was founded in 1957 in Delhi. CBT also operates a library, the Indraprastha Press, a doll museum, a children's center, sponsors international writing and painting contests for children, and publishes a children's magazine, "Children's World." The site describes their operations with photos and pictures of book covers along with ordering information. Some of the titles are in Hindi.

Government Internet server which provides services to facilitate exchange between Indian universities and research institutions. Includes links to major universities and research institutions and a long list of links to universities worldwide. The websites can be searched directly from the ERNET homepage.

On-line version of the Times of India supplement on education that provides news and essays on education in India as well as higher education in Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom and the United States.

The Goethals Indian Library and Research Society  (http://www.goethals.org/)
Library of mainly 18th and 19th century books and periodicals started by Paul Goethals, Jesuit Archbishop of Calcutta from 1886 to 1901 and donated to St. Xavier's College 1908. The library currently contains 18,663 volumes. Features subject catalogs, bibliographies (some annotated) and book lists on a wide range of topics: voyages and travels, history, biographies, folklore, astronomy, flora and fauna, geology, language and literature, archaeology, education, religion, philosophy, law, medicine, government and administration in India and other Asian countries. Arrangement within subgroups is alphabetical by title. Not all of the library holdings are included in these guides. Includes articles by the current director, Felix Raj.

Institute founded in 1980 by the Indian Council of Social Science Research, Govt. of India, and the Government of Uttar Pradesh. The Institute focuses on "socio-economic development, popular culture, public policies and social technologies of modernity." It provides academic and professional training, guidance, consultancy and research feedback to scholars, agencies, institutions and government organizations concerned with development. Non-profit organization established December 1994 to create a forum for environmental protection and awareness, promote nature conservation, sponsor environmental education, and undertake research on the ecology, conservation and equitable management of the environment. Collective body of universities and research institutions, involved in teaching, research and related activities in the social sciences. Humanities institute set up by the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India in Simla in 1964 for academic research in Indian culture, comparative religion, and social and natural sciences. The site provides profile and history of the Institute and information about academic programs, administration, lists and abstracts of publications, and the library.

Management-training institute established in 1982 in Bhopal to develop knowledge useful for managers in the areas of forestry, environment, and natural resources management and allied sectors. Offers degree programs and undertakes consultancy work for national and international clients from government, industry and other allied sectors. Website gives information on the institute's events, mailing list, and publications, research, and seminars. "Data Bank" links to a large categorized collection of statistics, reports, and documents.

National institute for training, teaching and research in mass communication founded in 1965. The Institute is an autonomous center fully funded by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Govt. of India. Provides profile of IIMC and information about its training programs including post-graduate diploma courses in journalism and advertising and public relations, diploma course in development journalism for nonaligned and other developing countries, orientation course for Indian Information Service and short term courses. New Delhi-based research and educational institute founded in 1958 that conducts and promotes research and training in economics and related subjects. A left-oriented peoples' science literature organization, which has a large mass base and is involved in agitative, educative and constructive activities in areas such as environment, health, education, energy, development, literacy, and microplanning. The site details the various activities, institutions run by the organization, and lists of publications.

Lalit Kala Akademi  (http://www.lalitkala.org.in/intromer.htm)
Founded in 1953 by the Department of Culture, Government of India as an autonomous body, the Akademi promotes and coordinates study and research in the fields of creative visual arts. Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda  (http://www.msub.edu)
Maharajah Sayajirao Gaekwad established Baroda College in 1880, and a succession of additional institutions of higher education followed over the next 50 years, including the famed Oriental Institute. In 1949 these institutions were brought together as the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. Tamilnadu Corporation for Development of Women, Ltd.  (http://www.tamilnaduwomen.org/)
Incorporated in 1983 and funded by Government of Tamil Nadu and Government of India, the corporation strives to enhance the economic empowerment of women in Tamil Nadu state through programs providing credit for small businesses, vocational training, and a women's welfare center. Activities are coordinated with selected nongovernmental organizations and other training institutions. The site offers a large amount of information on the organization's, structure, activities, events, etc. and includes many reports (.doc format) and a long page of links to related organizations.

Major university founded in 1974. The site includes an overview on the university and basic information about the schools, departments and centers.

V.V. Giri National Labour Institute  (http://www.vvgnli.org/)
Labor organization that conducts and assists in organizing, training, and education programs, coordinates research, analyzes problems encountered in planning and implementing labor programs, and maintains library and information services. Areas of research include labor market studies, employment relations and regulations, and agrarian relations and rural labor studies. The Institute also houses the National Research Centre on Labour Information and the National Research Centre for Child Labor. Working Women's Forum (India)  (http://www.workingwomensforum.org/index1.htm)
Initiated in 1978 Working Women's Forum is an organization of poor women workers seeking to reverse the oppressions of caste, class and gender. Based in Chennai and operating mostly in southern India, programs include unionization, a credit cooperative network, reproductive and child health services, vocational training, child labor, leadership training.
