The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is composed of some of the former Trucial States of the Persian Gulf. In 1971 six of these states - Abu Dhabi, `Ajman, Al-Fujayrah, Al-Shariqah, Dubay, and Um al-Qaywayn - merged to form the UAE. Ra's al-Khaymah joined in 1972. The UAE is a federation with specified powers delegated to the federal government that include interalia foreign affairs, security, defense, nationality and immigration, and others reserved to member emirates. The UAE, which borders the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf coast, has a population of 2.7 million (2001 est.) of which over 1.5 million are non-nationals. Due in large part to its oil wealth, its per capita GDP is close to that of the leading West European nations.
