The National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS) was established in Tokyo in 1874 as the Tokyo Drug Control Laboratory and is the oldest health research institution in Japan. It is now a major organization within the Ministry of Health and Welfare. It is composed of 18 divisions, the Osaka Branch and 5 Experimental Stations for Medicinal Plants. The site includes information on drugs, chemicals, and the environment.
