in Brazil range from 14,000 to 220,000, including sports clubs,
schools, social clubs, and neighborhood associations. Studies
have indicated that the 400 largest organizations represent 90
percent of activity in the sector.

Founded in 1991 and with 270 member associations as of November
2005, the Brazilian Association of Nongovernmental Organizations
(ABONG) collectively represents the interests of Brazilian NGOs
and promotes communication and connections among NGOs dedicated
to strengthening democracy and civil rights. Members organizations
work in the areas of regional development, human rights, public
policy, agricultural issues, urban issues, and environmental

World Social Forum is an open meeting place where social movements,
networks, NGOs, and other civil society organizations opposed
to neo-liberalism and a world dominated by capital or by any

freely, and network for effective action to create an alternative

International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), a nongovernmental, international
organization sponsored by UNESCO and headquartered in Paris. ICOMOS promotes
the worldwide conservation of monuments and historic sites by professionals,
volunteers, and specialists. ICOMOS/Brasil was founded in Rio de Janeiro
in 1974. The site contains a list of the national council members, the council
