This site recommends classroom materials, lesson plans, and faculty guides on Asia for educators. Materials can be viewed by subject areas, type (including central themes, maps, primary sources, and statistics), and by time period. It also features units on Asian culture and history. Can also be searched by country under each subject area.

AsiaSource: AsiaEXPERTS - A resource of the Asia Society  (http://www.asiasource.org/experts/)
The AsiaExperts database gives information on specialists in Asian culture, arts, history, and society. Profiles list individual's areas of expertise, publications, contact information, and more.

The Association for Asian Studies, Inc.  (http://www.aasianst.org)
Based in the United States, but has members worldwide. One of the world's leading organizations for scholarly research on all aspects of Asia, mainly anthropology, sociology, culture, literature, history, and archeology, and to a lesser extent, politics and economics. Links include Bibliography of Asian Studies Online (http://www.aasianst.org/bassub.htm), by subscription only, with information on how to subscribe by individual or institution; Journal of Asian Studies (http://www.aasianst.org/catalog/jas.htm), with the table of contents and synopses of articles of recent issues; and Asia Resources on the World Wide Web: Resources on China (http://www.aasianst.org/wwwchina.htm), with comprehensive links, mostly scholarly but some popular.

Beijing municipal government website. Comprehensive search and links to Chinese scientific and technical organizations and databases. Mainly popular interest but includes academic sources as well. In Chinese only.

The Center's thirty-plus faculty forms an intellectual community fostering collaboration among humanists, professionals, and social scientists, in an environment appreciative of the interdependency of past and present. The mission of the Center is to provide students, specialists and the public at large with expert resources and a deeper understanding of issues ranging from today's headlines to time-honored questions of value and meaning.

China Data Center - the University of Michigan  (http://chinadatacenter.org/newcdc/)
The China Data Center at the University of Michigan is a new initiative to advance the study and understanding of China. A primary goal of the Center will be the integration of historical, social and natural science data in a geographic information system, where spatial and temporal references will be maintained through a relational database. A fundamental role of the Center is the development of cooperative endeavors with China, with other universities, and institutions around the world. The Center will establish mechanisms for coordinating a decentralized effort to standardize, document, integrate, and share data about China with other institutions.

Chinese Academy of Sciences = Zhong guo ke xue yuan / 中国科学院  (http://www.cas.ac.cn/)
Circuitous but comprehensive links to its affiliated administrative and research organizations, and to selected foreign research organizations. The site has a link to a limited English version that provides brief announcements on activities of the Academy.

Cities/Buildings Image Archive  (http://www.washington.edu/ark2/)
The database contains a few general photos of Asian buildings. There are two methods of searching the database. The first is found by clicking the "Old Site" link. Information in the Old Database is organized into four layers: (1) Country; (2) City or Location; (3) Subject; (4) View, Detail. Geographic coverage inclues China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tibet, and others. Each photograph is annotated according to the following schedule: slide number; file format; subject; detail; nation; city; state; site; date; architect; materials; type; keywords; photographer; copyright holder; photographer's reference no.; transmission data; date of photograph; source. The second method of search is accessed by clicking "Enter the Database." This method allows up to four search terms to be entered a number of categories.

Gateway Service Center of Chinese Academic Journal Publications = Guo ji Zhong wen xue shu qi kan wen xian chuan di zhong xin 國際中文學術期刊文獻傳遞中心  (http://www.library.pitt.edu/gateway/)
The website provides general information about the Gateway Service Centre of Chinese Academic Journal Publications. There are links to its online request form, search catalogs, general information about the service as well as the East Asian Library. This Digital Document Delivery Center provides free delivery of full-text copies of Chinese-language academic journal articles to any researcher in the United States. The Center is administered by the East Asian Library of the University of Pittsburgh. The Center focuses on the delivery of Chinese-language academic journal publications that are not available in the collections of US research libraries.

Library of the Chinese Academy of Sciences = Zhong guo ke xue yuan wen xian qing bao zhong xin / 中国科学院文献情报中心  (http://www.las.ac.cn/index.jsp)
Comprehensive links to the Library holdings and to other academic and scientific databases and organizations, in all languages both domestic and foreign. This site has some overlap with the Chinese Academy of Sciences website but it is maintained independently and is easier to use. The site does not provide an English version.

Nanjing University = Nan jing da xue / 南京大学  (http://www.nju.edu.cn/cps/site/NJU/nju/nju.htm)
Homepage of Nanjing (historical spelling: Nanking) University. Has a few links to other University sites. For more comprehensive link to Chinese-language sites in and outside the University, go to the University library (http://202.119.47.3/), or click on the English Version and then click on Library. The Library site is in Chinese only.

Ochlocrat's Learn Mandarin  (http://www.ocrat.com/ocrat/)
Though no longer maintained, an excellent site providing applets and other computer applications, such as for making Chinese GIF files, painting Chinese in applications.

On-line Chinese Tools  (http://www.mandarintools.com/cintro.html)
A rich site with tools (software) for learning and using Chinese. Includes Java flashcards, a Chinese text annotator, a romanization converter, instructions for drawing Chinese characters, Chinese/English dictionary, converters for East Asian currency, the solar and lunar calendars, and numbers, and many others. Also provides links to numerous computer tools, including perl scripts and macros, as well as access to an archive of 15,000 character GIFs indexed by Unicode value.

Peking University = Bei jing da xue / 北京大学  (http://www.pku.edu.cn/)
Homepage of Beijing University (Peking University in the old spelling). Comprehensive links to the University itself and to other Chinese and foreign academic sources. Provides an abbreviated English version, which is not quite as comprehensive but still good.

Peking University. Computer Networks and Distributed Systems Laboratory. Web Gather = Tian wang sou suo / 天网搜索  (http://e.pku.edu.cn/)
One of the best search engines for Chinese sources by Beijing University's Computer Networks and Distributed Systems Laboratory, Web Gather. The explanations are all in Chinese, but the website allows Boolean search in both Chinese and English, and gives both Chinese- and English-language results. Link to Zhongguo xin xi bo wu guan, Web InfoMall, http://www.infomall.cn.

Tsinghua University = Qing hua da xue / 清华大学  (http://www.tsinghua.edu./chn/index.htm)
Homepage of Qinghua University (Tsinghua in the old spelling). The Chinese site provides comprehensive links to the university's administration and departments. A less detailed English version is also provided.

Universities Service Centre, Chinese University of Hong Kong  (http://www.usc.cuhk.edu.hk/)
Presents the Universities Service Centre at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, a research center that serves Chinese studies scholars. Provides information about the center's collections, data archives, online resources, and services.

Zhong hua ren min gong he guo jiao yu bu / 中华人民共和国教育部  (http://www.moe.edu.cn/)
This is an official website for education related information in China. It contains news releases from the Ministry, full-text collections of educational laws and ordinances, on-line monthly administrative reports by subject (since May 1998), documents on national educational policies and the Ministry's functions. Links to pages of its subordinate offices and organizations, including major universities' sites, and to other educational resources.
