The Program for Individuals with Disabilities is responsible for ensuring that all programs, activities, and facilities of Goddard Space Flight Center are accessible to people with disabilities. This is achieved through many programmatic initiatives and individuals. The work of providing accessibility for people with disabilities is a shared endeavor. The program is also responsible for providing reasonable accommodation to individuals with disabilities.

In general, the program works to promote the hiring and advancement of people with disabilities and to advise both management, and people with disabilities concerning issues confronting people with disabilities in the workplace throughout their careers, from recruitment to retirement.

The program has coordinated efforts to establish a baseline for facility modification that has been the basis for selecting projects for funding. It established two internship programs, one for high school students and one for undergraduate and graduate college students with disabilities, and has helped to define a standard for offices throughout Goddard in providing products and services that are convenient and usable by people with disabilities.

The Center Director's Equal Accessibility Advisory Committee, formrely the Equal Opportunity Advisory Committee on People with Disabilities, works closely with the Program for Individuals with Disabilities to give guidance and support to center management regarding systemic issues that are faced by people with disabilities.

The Program has held Town Hall meetings, focus groups, and community forums to discuss various issues related to people with disabilities. We have provided TTYs and other enabling technology to Center organizations with responsibility to interact with employees, contractors, and visitors to facilitate communication and provide more effective outreach efforts to include people with disabilities.

One of the most effective and successful endeavors of the Program is a strong partnership with Center organizations that hire individuals with disabilities. The Program provides technical assistance and often shares the responsibility for providing enabling technology so that individuals with disabilities can perform the duties of their jobs for which they are qualified.

The Program is also on the cutting edge of providing assistive technology in terms of the latest advancements in accommodations.

The Program often serves as a model for other NASA Centers programs for people with disabilities and provides a great deal of support and cooperative effort with various offices and organizations at NASA Headquarters and other Centers.
