Family Preservation: Concepts in American Indian Communities (PDF)
By Don Day, Priscilla Day, Cecilia Martinez, John Poupart, John G Red Horse
December 2000

Summary: This study examined the landscape of public policy that guides American Indian family preservation and appraises the impact of delivery systems that provide services to Indian communities. It provides a literature review of American Indian perspectives and mainstream family policy. The following conclusions were drawn from surveys, talking circles, and a community review process: (1) Indian family preservation is fundamentally linked to tribal sovereignty, (2) mainstream social service systems are outgrowths of Euro-American concepts of the nuclear family, and (3) American Indian history and tradition are crucial inputs to the further development of contemporary family preservation models. Appendices contain a summary of major legislation concerning children and families, two versions of the Family Preservation Survey, and survey respondents by State and Tribe. Contains 83 references.
