Indian child welfare: a status report - includes related information (HTML)
By Margaret C Plantz
Children Today; January-February 1989

Summary: This document highlights findings from the first systematic national examination of the effects of the Indian Child Welfare Act (P.L. 95-608) enacted by Congress in 1978. The Indian Child Welfare Act has not reduced the flow of Indian children into substitute care. Although the number of Indian children in public care has decreased, the caseloads of Tribal programs are rising sharply as these programs expand and cases are transferred from public agencies. The substantial increase in Tribal substitute care caseloads nationally indicates a need for expanded preventive services to children whose needs currently cannot be met in their own homes because of a lack of such services.
