INTRODUCTION
The researcher using this list is cautioned that not all newspaper titles held by the Library of Congress are indexed; however, early U.S. newspapers often covered areas much larger than just the towns where they were published. The user is further cautioned that few indexes are complete, and many errors and omissions can be expected.
The format of this compilation goes from the general to the specific, i.e., for both the U.S. and foreign press, the indexes of a general nature are listed first, separated from that which specifically pertain to the States and countries. The same format is followed for indexes of the press of an individual State or country.
The format of the entry follows that of the Library's printed catalog card including the classification number and an indication of the holdings in the Newspaper and Current Periodical Room.
Standard library and postal abbreviations are used throughout the compilation.
