World War I: An Annotated Bibliography

Other World War I Microform Collections

Microform collections concerning the World War I era comprise a vast array of official U.S. and foreign government reports, not only about the war and post-war periods. Special collections focus on reconstruction and peace negotiations, as well as unique publications about the war, art, women, and the League of Nations. Print guides for most of these collections are located in the Main Reading Room at the reference desk. LC subject headings are provided for many of the guides in this list.

British war art of the 20th century : the official war artists record of the two world wars. -- London : Mindata, 1982. -- 126 microfiches ; 11 x 15 cm.

Approximately 7,000 of the principal paintings, drawings, watercolors, and sculptures commissioned by the British government during the two World Wars reproduced in black and white and filmed from holdings of the British Imperial War Museum. A small number of works (240) are in color. Many of the images and subjects include: tanks, airplanes, factories and factory work, and portraits of military and political leaders. There are also pictures of women doing war work; scenes of the Russian Revolution; the devastation of cities caused by bombings; fighting in France and elsewhere on the continent, and in the Middle East.

The World War II segment includes a large collection of wash drawings by children's book illustrator Edward Ardizzone: London street scenes; the London Underground during the Blitz; and other pictures of ordinary people in wartime.

Begins a continuing series that will make available to a wider audience the War Reserve Collection housed at Cambridge University. This vast collection was conceived by Francis Jenkinson in 1915 in order to preserve the cultural history of World War I, as found in personal reminiscences, trench publications, propaganda from both the Allied and German war efforts, as well as government and military records. Part 1 (7 reels) reproduces the card catalog index and manuscript listings for the entire collection. Part 2 (20 reels) covers a wide variety of newsletters, periodicals, broadsides, etc. produced by and for the troops in Europe and a few published war experiences. Future microfilm will encompass military operations 1915-1918; Russia, the Bolsheviks and the Eastern Front; peace and reconstruction; and the creation of the League of Nations.

The preface of these works states that the Peace Negotiations following World War I were one-sided, with Conditions of Peace imposed on Hungary without a fair hearing of that country's positions or arguments. These materials bring together all of the Conditions, as well as Hungary's responses and notes. Volume I contains all of Hungary's Notes and Annexes submitted before receiving the Conditions of Peace along with the actual Conditions. Volume II has reply Notes and amendments to the Conditions. Volume III includes a collection of maps, statistical tables, and a detailed index.

Women, industry, and trades unionism : the Gertrude Tuckwell collection, 1890-1920. --Brighton, Sussex : Harvester Press, 1981. -- 17 microfilm reels ; 35 mm.

Consists of more than 700 folders of reports, unpublished personal papers, pamphlets, leaflets, and press clippings, concerning women's political and economic status in Great Britain between 1890 and 1922, filmed from holdings of the Trades Union Congress Library.

The files were collected by Gertrude Tuckwell, honorary secretary of the Women's Trade Union League during that time. Major areas covered by the files include legislation relating to women workers and to national insurance and health insurance; women's employment, especially women's work during World War I; the political career of Mary Macarthur (General Secretary of the WTUL); and women and other political organizations (e.g., the East London Suffrage Association; the British Socialist Party; and the Trades Union Councils of England, Scotland, and Ireland).

A small post-1922 collection, including an unpublished autobiography of Gertrude Tuckwell, appears on the last reel.

Pamphlets compiled by various authors and institutions and published by the foundation to educate people on the waste and destructiveness of war and to promote international justice and the brotherhood of man. Founded in Boston in 1910 by Edwin Ginn, the foundation concerned itself with many of the events leading up to and including World War I and its aftermath, as well as the promotion and operation of the League of Nations. In October 1917, when this collection begins, the foundation changed the title of its pamphlet series to League of Nations. It discontinued this title in 1923 with volume 6, no. 3, and returned to the World Peace Foundation series title, and described itself as the "American agent for the official publications of the League of Nations."
