World War I: An Annotated Bibliography

Military Newspapers in the General Collection

The Library of Congress has a collection of more than 300 military newspapers published during, and immediately after, World War I. Although the major portion of this collection is comprised of U.S. newspapers published by Army, Navy, Marine, and Air Corps units, foreign newspapers, published by both Allied and Central powers, portray the war from the unique perspective of each country's armed forces.

A comprehensive list of all military newspapers at the Library of Congress is beyond the scope of this finding aid. It is possible, though, to do a guided search using the Library of Congress Online Catalog (OPAC) to create a list of 305 World War I-era military newspapers and military magazines. In a guided search, or guided keyword search, limit the search to "Serials." In the search box enter "World War, 1914-1918," then select the options "as a phrase" and "Subject" from the pull-down menus to the right of the search box. The brief display will provide titles. Click on "Full" for the complete bibliographic citation of a specific title. The following selected titles are examples of American World War I publications in the general collection. Titles designated as "PMIP" (preservation microfilming in process) are unavailable in hard copy as of fall 2005, but will eventually be available on microfilm.
