Defining Moments: A Chronology
Cover Photograph: John Plumbe, Jr. The United States Capitol from the East. Detail. Half-plate daguerreotype, circa 1846. The earliest surviving photograph of the Capitol, Plumbe's daguerreotype shows the Capitol with its old copper-sheathed wooden dome. This work was one of several daguerreotypes of Washington scenes and buildings--including the White House and the U.S. Patent Office--acquired by the Library in 1974.
This publication was made possible by generous support
from the James
Madison Council, a national, private-sector advisory council dedicated
to helping the Library of Congress share its unique resources with the
nation and the world.
