SMDP and Andrija Štampar School of Public Health Co-Host Fourth Biennial Conference

SMDP’s 4th Biennial Conference, Strengthening Global Public Health Management Capacity, in Cavtat, Croatia, May 25–29, 2008, brought together approximately 100 public health professionals from around the world to discuss strengthening global public health management capacity.

Elaborating on the conference theme of “Best Practices, Collaboration, and Learning Networks,” speakers presented on creating and expanding partnerships and collaborations, effective tactics for disseminating best practices, and the development of learning communities.

Dr. Dominque Egger, coordinator of WHO’s Organization and Management of Health Services program, presented on WHO’s Leadership and Management Strengthening Framework. Other presenters included Professor Jadranka Božikov, Acting Director, Andrija Štampar School of Public Health; Mr. Miše Galjuf, Deputy Governor of Dubrovnik-Neretva County; Dr. Patricia Simone, Director, Division of Global Public Health Capacity Development, Coordinating Office for Global Health, CDC; and Dr. Elizabeth Howze, Chief, SMDP.

Conference attendees also participated in interactive, skill-building workshops on topics that included assessments of management training needs, effective collaborations, and social marketing. Participants also were clustered by region to discuss current problems, future plans, and ways to improve communication and information sharing. Alumni of the Management for International Public Health course presented results from their applied management improvement projects.

Winners of the Management Capacity-Building Program Excellence Award for 2008 were Vietnam for Strengthening Management Capacity for HIV/AIDS Personnel; and Botswana for Sustainable Management Development Training Program for Middle-Level Managers of Public Health Programs.

Teams from Malawi, the Philippines, Swaziland, and Vietnam won Applied Management Improvement Awards, and teams from Croatia and the Philippines won Post-graduate Applied Management Improvement Awards.


MIPH Class of 2007MIPH Farewell

The CDC Management for International Public Health (MIPH) course in 2007 brought together a diverse group of public health professionals to Atlanta to learn, share experiences, and become skilled and knowledgeable management trainers in a setting removed from the workplace and the pressure of daily responsibilities. The class comprised 24 participants from 12 countries and included nurses, medical university faculty, physicians, epidemiologists, trainers, and economists. They came from Botswana, Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Malawi, Nigeria, Pakistan, St. Lucia, Tanzania, Thailand, Vietnam, and Zambia.

The 2007 class comprised 24 participants from 12 countries participating in an intense six weeks of faculty development. This year the participants came from Botswana, Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Malawi, Nigeria, Pakistan, St. Lucia, Tanzania, Thailand, Vietnam, and Zambia. Professionally, the group included nurses, medical university faculty, physicians, epidemiologists, trainers, and economists.

This year’s class brings to 349 the total number of MIPH course alumni working in 63 countries around the world.
