How to View the Data
Expedited query Example: What is the trend in diabetes among older African- American women? In this example, you want to know the trend in the death rates for diabetes mellitus among African-American women 65-74 years of age. Select "Mortality by Race, Cause, 1980-96 (10-Year Age Groups)" from the list of topics by clicking on the Expedited Query icon next to the title. A new screen appears with a brief description of the table. Click on the title and the variable selection box appears. There is a summary of the variables in the table on the right side of the box. From the menu on the left, select each of the variables and check the categories you are interested in. In this example, for "Age," select the "65-74"age group , and for "Year" select year 1990-96.For race, select " Black."For "Sex," select "Female." For cause of death, select "Diabetes Mellitus." And for "Units," select death rates, age-adjusted to the 2000 U.S. population - "Rates (2000). With all our selections completed click on "view data." You will see the table. to Use the Browser Open
the table on "Percent in Fair or Poor Health" by clicking on the Expanded
table's icon next to the title, then select
"open it" in the next dialogue box. Drag
the blue column title "age" (holding the left mouse button down) until it covers
the variable title "Race: All," which is above and to the right. Categories of
the race variable then become the rows, and age becomes a category selection variable.
Select age from the menu and find the category "85 and older" using the arrows.
The table has been redesigned. Finally, download the table into a
spreadsheet or database. From the drop down file menu at the top select "save
as" and then identify the type of file to be saved, the location, and the name with
appropriate subscript. Each table contains a Help feature that will assist you in manipulating and analyzing the data. Please Let Us Know if you experience any problems. To learn more
about the Browser: Downloading the Browser Follow the on-screen setup instructions. Click on the setup button to install the browser. On the page "Beyond 20/20® Setup," click on "Express CD-ROM Setup." This will create a directory called "try2020" where the browser will be saved.
