A Senior Development Seminar
May 11 - 13, 2004 | Defense Institute of International Legal Studies, Newport, Rhode Island
The
Institute, in partnership with the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies, held a seminar at the US Naval Education and Training Center, Newport, Rhode Island for twenty-nine civilian and military participants from the ministries of foreign affairs and defense from nineteen countries. This was the seventh seminar conducted by USIP for DIILS. The seminar focused on conflict management skills useful in conducting international humanitarian and peace operations. This seminar was held in conjunction with DIILS’ five week training on “Military and Peacekeeping Operations in Accordance with the Rule of Law.” The seminar included presentations, exercises, and a simulation, all designed to develop conflict management techniques and skills, cross-cultural awareness, effective communication, as well as negotiation, mediation, and problem-solving techniques. Participants stated that the training would help them in their present positions as well as future assignments. The next seminar of this kind will be held in November 2004.
