Above - Photo A - Buried Road: Wave overwash covered the road with sand over 1 m thick. Afterwards, road crews removed the sand bulldozers. The resulting morphology of the excavated road is clearly shown in the Post-storm Topographic Map below (see location A).

Below - Post-storm Topographic Map: Elevations derived from laser altimetry data acquired after Hurricane Dennis in Rodanthe, NC. The ocean is indicated by purple colors and houses on the beach are indicated in red. Houses that were lost during the storm are indicated in white. The locations of the lost houses were found by comparing pre- and post-storm laser altimetry elevations. Locations of surrounding photos (A, B, and C) are noted.

Photo B - Condemned Houses: These three houses stand in the swash zone. The balcony supports were destroyed during the storm.

Photo C - Condemned Houses: With no remaining protective dunes, and subject to inundation during moderate wave conditions, these homes been condemned.
