Education Secretary Rod Paige discusses the importance of the 1954 decision desegregating the nation's schools.

Clip #1:   ListenStream (:19)   DownloadDownload(2.1mb)

Transcript: The Brown decision provided access to young people - they could now go to the classroom, they have access to the classroom. But we know now that doesn't mean you get a quality education. What we need now is activity in the classroom, activity which is guaranteed through the No Child Left Behind act, which I consider to be the logical next step to Brown vs. the Board of Education.

Clip #2:   ListenStream (:19)   DownloadDownload(2.1mb)

Transcript: And I think Brown vs. the Board of Education was one of the most important decisions the Supreme Court's rendered in this century. But what is important also is that we follow the Brown decision with the No Child Left Behind act, which is the logical next step. It assures that we have education going on in the classroom now that our young people have access to the classroom.

Clip #3:   ListenStream (:26)   DownloadDownload(2.7mb)

Transcript: It provides opportunity for every single child to have access, but we now know access is not enough. We've got to make sure something happens while the child is in the classroom and that's where No Child Left Behind begins its heavy lifting. Brown provided access, No Child Left Behind provides assurance that something goes on inside the classroom. Brown is the first step, No Child Left Behind is the natural and logical next step.
