Advanced Management Program (AMP) 35 Graduation
Thursday, December 13, 2007, 22 mid-to-senior-level government officials graduated from the College’s 14-week Advanced Management Program (AMP).  This was the College’s 35th AMP and the first graduation in this the College’s 20th Anniversary year.  The ceremony was presided over by the College’s Senior Director, Dr. Robert D. Childs.  The President of the National Defense University, Lieutenant General, F.C. Wilson, U.S. Marine Corps, provided graduation remarks stressing the value of life-long learning and continual relationship-building.  The graduates were from various elements of the Department of Defense, as well as the Department of State, and coalition partners from Bulgaria, Pakistan, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, and Singapore.   Six of the graduates were participating in this program as part of their National Security Agency’s Information Assurance Scholarship Program.

The AMP includes core courses in policy, strategic planning, performance measurement, business process improvement, acquisition, information assurance, and strategic leader development.  Additionally, students participated in a variety of electives with their student peers from the National Defense University’s Industrial College of the Armed Forces, National War College, and School for National Security Executive Education.  The Advanced Management Program’s curriculum enables students to earn a Chief Information Officer Certificate, as well as the Advanced Management Program Certificate.  Many students through their elective choices pursue courses that apply towards the College’s other programs, including Information Assurance, Enterprise Architecture,  IT Project Management,  and Organizational Transformation.

The graduation ceremony recognized the excellence of  six Distinguished Graduates.  Four individuals were recognized as Distinguished Graduates in the AMP and CIO Certificate Program:  Major Richard Harmon, U.S. Air Force; Lim Hwee Kwang, Singapore Ministry of Defense, Lieutenant Colonel Liu Mun Kwong, Singapore Armed Forces, and Lieutenant Colonel John C. Richard, U.S. Air Force.  Mr. Michael Ralph was recognized as a Distinguished Graduate for  Information Technology Program Management.  Mr. Mark A. Stanley was recognized as a Distinguished Graduate in the Information Assurance 4011 Certification Program.   Mr. Kent Schneider, President and CEO of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association, recognized Mr. Lim Hwee Kwang, Singapore as the AMP’s Top Distinguished Graduate.  Mr. Joe Matusic, Computer Sciences Corporation, presented a plaque to Dr. Childs to commemorate this AMP’s graduation.

The College’s 36th AMP will begin on January 7, 2008. 

Applications for the Fall 2008 AMP, that begins September 8, 2008, are currently being accepted.  Applications are due June 2, 2008.  The early application deadline is May 1, 2008.  Questions regarding participation may be directed to the AMP Director, Dr. Kathleen Schulin, schulink@ndu.edu.

Fall 2007 Advanced Management Program Begins the IRM College’s 20th Anniversary Celebration

The AMP’s convocation was presided over by the LtGen F.C. Wilson, USMC, President, National Defense University and Dr. Robert D. Childs, Senior Director, IRM College.   Dr. Childs began the convocation by noting this AMP begins the celebration of the College’s 20th anniversary.  The convocation’s guest speaker, Mr. Alan P. Balutis, Director and Distinguished Fellow, Internet Business Solutions Group, CISCO, charged the students to make the most of their 14-weeks in honing their skills as advocates of change, leaders of change, and collaborators across boundaries.

DoD CIO Speaks at Alumni Lunch
On Wednesday, May 17, 2006, the Honorable John G. Grimes, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Networks and Information Integration and Department of Defense (DoD) CIO, was the guest speaker at the inaugural event of the new Association of the Information Resources Management College at the Fort Lesley J. McNair Officers’ Club.  Mr. Grimes presented the priorities, challenges, and opportunities of his office, and strategies for transforming national defense through net-centricity.   Approximately 75 graduates and faculty attended, including some from as far away as New Zealand and the Netherlands. Annual Graduation

The College publicly recognized over 100 graduates who attended graduation exercises on April 7, 2006 along with 300 family members, colleagues, and special guests. Graduates who did not attend will receive their certificates by mail in the coming days. Over 400 graduates earned certificates in IRM College programs this year. The graduation speaker, Dr. Steven Kelman of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, challenged the graduates to be positive change agents in government service. Center for Academic Excellence in IA
The IRM College has been designated by the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education for another three year period (2006 – 2009). more.... (posted - May 30, 2006)

Romanian Project
The IRM College recently concluded a successful capacity-development project with the Romanian Regional Center for Defense Resources Management. The College worked closely with the Romanian faculty over an 18-month period to develop a CIO program. The inuaugural ten-week post-graduate program, offered in Brasov, Romania beginning in March 2006, graduate thirteen defense and civilian government participants. The faculty collaboration was initiated by two graduates of the Advanced Management Program, General Aurelian Ionescu and Lieutenant Colonel Cezar Vasilescu. (posted-May 30, 2006)

New Lockheed-Martin Chair in Enterprise Architecture
Lockheed Martin Services, Incorporated (LMSI) has graciously agreed to support a chair for a Visiting Faculty at the IRM College for four years. This will enrich IRM College's enterprise architecture curriculum with the experience of a distinguished industry practitioner, Mark McGibbon. Before joining the faculty, Mr. McGibbon led LMSI’s enterprise architecture program supporting the United States European Command, Stuttgart, Germany. This is the College’s second private sector chair; the Robbins-Gioia Chair, Dennis Hall, is in his second year at the College. (posted-May 30, 2006)

Net-Centric Operations (NCO) Forum
The Net-Centric Operations (NCO) Forum, held in Arlington, VA (October 3-5, 2006), provided perspectives on the current challenges, applications, and lessons learned from net-centric operations and applications. The event focused on the funding, management, and development of new systems as well as on the acute management and security of information when transmitting data across networks. Three IRM College faculty members provided their expertise during a workshop that discussed the significant challenges surrounding NCO. The team of Lt Col Tony Buenger (USAF), Mr. Mark McGibbon, and LTC Ranson Ricks (USA) facilitated an in-depth session that included topics such as: addressing the security issues that arise in information sharing environments, evaluating the challenges of delivering real-time actionable information to war fighters, understanding the how the Global Information Grid (GIG) enables net-centric capabilities, and assessing the technological requirements needed to enhance net-centric operations. (photos) The session was well received by conference attendees, who rated the IRM College presenters very high on their knowledge and expertise of the NCO topics. New Organizational Transformation Certificate Focuses on Defense and National SecurityThe new Organizational Transformation Certificate beginning in FY 07 is organized around three foundation courses that target the heart of organizational transformation:  the dynamic environment and governance (Transformation as Strategic Alignment), networking and multi-agency collaboration (Multi-Agency Information-Enabled Collaboration), and creativity and disruptive innovation (Leading Strategies for Disruptive Innovations).  The specialty courses focus on particular aspects of Defense and National Security, Homeland Security and National Preparedness.   Read more...

Courses for Professional Development
The College welcomes students who enroll in individual courses to learn and to connect with others without seeking certificate or academic credit.  “Professional Development” is replacing the enrollment status of “General Studies” and the grade of “Audit” for participants who enroll in occasional courses.  The College is actively recruiting professional development students to its courses from the Department of Defense and federal agencies.
