This collection presents the papers of the nineteenth-century African-American abolitionist who escaped from slavery and then risked his own freedom by becoming an outspoken antislavery lecturer, writer, and publisher. The Douglass papers contain the full text of an 1888 speech on tariff legislation delivered by McKinley while serving in the U.S. House of Representatives.
