Mission Statement
The Gainesville Location Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Committee is charged with developing policy and carrying out activities to increase the diversity of the workforce at the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Center for Medical, Agricultural, and Veterinary Entomology (CMAVE). We advise the Center director and the ARS South Atlantic Area (SAA) Office about EEO/CR concerns and prepare reports for SAA and ARS Headquarters administrators. Each year, we sponsor several career development and training activities, science outreach programs, and special observances. The committee's science education outreach activities have received community and SAA commendations.

August 6-9: Engineer participates in the first National Hispanic Environmental Council (NHEC) Minority Youth Environmental Training Institute.
On August 6th through the 9th Maritza Romero participated as an invited "volunteer role model" in the 10-day USDA funded institute in New Mexico. As part of her two day stay at the institute she made various presentations relating to the type of research that is performed at CMAVE as well as the different career fields (entomologists, chemists, biologists, pathologists and engineers) that work together as a team in order to fulfill our goals. Personal experiences on what it took to succeed as well as how our unique heritage affects our choices both were shared with the group of 30 kids. She was also called upon to do an on the spot presentation on energy sources and energy generation and transmission as the invited speaker was buys restoring power to the conference facility. As a role model she spent two days from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm accompanying these children, answering questions, critiquing their presentations and adding personal knowledge to the extensive class training.
