Audio Conference/Webinar on Strategies for Financing a Professional Development System
On November 13, 2008, the Afterschool Investments project held an audio conference/webinar for State and Regional Office staff and others in the afterschool professional development field. Drawing from our recent peer-to-peer learning network meeting in September 2008, this webinar focused on the financing of professional development systems. The panel of speakers included Ellen Gannett of NIOST, who presented on cross-cutting issues in funding professional development systems, including a discussion on strategies for expanding the TEACH model to school-age care. Panelists from Vermont and Illinois also participated and shared their state initiatives and lessons learned. Finally, a presentation by The Finance Project highlighted strategic financing considerations before an interactive question-and-answer session with the audience. Professional Development Audio Conference: Creating a Credential for a School-Age Workforce
On April 24, 2008, the Afterschool Investments project held an audio conference for State and Regional Office staff on the history, development and implementation of school-age credentials as part of the larger professional development system. The panelists discussed the Military School-Age Credential, Connecticut’s Credential in After School Education, and Missouri’s Youth Development Credential. Direct Technical Assistance to States
In October 2003, the Afterschool Investments project staff began
to provide technical assistance to a select number of States in
which the child care administrator has expressed interest in fostering
coordination and developing resources to support a statewide afterschool
infrastructure. These States include: Arkansas (Region VI), Maine (Region I), Minnesota (Region V),
Oregon (Region X), Louisiana (Region VI), Ohio (Region V), Utah (Region VIII),
and Montana (Region VIII).
In each of these States, a diverse group of stakeholders has come together
around the goal of creating a statewide afterschool network. Afterschool
Investments project staff are working with the child care administrator
and other key contacts to support their efforts by providing technical
assistance that may include guidance on developing a shared vision,
creating a network governance structure, estimating the supply of
and demand for afterschool, engaging key stakeholders, as well as
on-site technical assistance, as needed.
Other Technical Assistance Activities: Regional and National Meetings
One of the goals of the Afterschool Investments project is to
identify other major programs and sectors that are potential partners
for CCDF in supporting out-of-school time programs, and to provide
models, strategies, and tools for coordination with other programs
and sectors.
During the first three years of the project, Afterschool Investments project
staff presented at many of the regional state administrator meetings and the
national State administrators meetings to bring together potential child care
and education partners, facilitate conversations among new partners, and
provide information and content expertise on similar partnerships that are
taking place in other States and at the national level.
The Afterschool Investments project is available to support similar
efforts at related national and regional child care meetings where
State administrators are key participants.
